Kinda inactive in here, eh? Are there any other Newcastle/Gateshead communities around?

Question: A friend and I are going to be attending the Masters Programme in creative writing at Newcastle Uni, she in the fiction strand, and myself in the poetry. Anyone else ever taken this course?

Another question: Where should we stay? We've both spent considerable amount of time in the UK, but never on our own or for long periods at a time. We'll be staying a year and would prefer our own flat, or perhaps another roommate or two. We'd like to not stay in dorms. Where could we begin searching for this type of housing? Any websites you recommend?

Thanks :)

Okay, the 3 main student localities in Newcastle are Sandyford, Jesmond and Heaton.
You can rent either a flat to share, or 2 bedrooms in a bigger house (this sometimes works out more sociable/cheaper, but if you value your privacy it might not be for you)

Try using the following property search sites, searching by the above locations:

http://www.fish4homes.co.uk
http://www.primelocation.com
http://www.look4aflat.com/rent-property/
http://www.rightmove.co.uk

That should keep you going for a while...

I live in the Heaton area and I like it here. It's about as close as you're going to get to uni for a reasonable amount of money (you'd expect to pay £50 - £60 pppw in Heaton/Sandyford compared with £70+ in Jesmond.

I'm not sure exactly how it works (I doubt they are university owned) but you can rent private properties through the university accomodation office. It's not what I have done but by all accounts it seems like a good thing to do - you're not going to get screwed over by some landlord.

Good luck!
