Newcastle upon Tyne is a city in the county of Tyne and Wear in North East England. The "toon" is the main city in the North East of England, and the sixth largest city in England.

Historically, people from Newcastle have been known formally as Novocastrians. The word Geordie, however, is more often used these days as an informal and affectionate term for Newcastle's inhabitants, though it is also used for Tyneside people in general. People living elsewhere in the North East do not care to be called Geordies, but outsiders tend not to differentiate, and call the entire region 'Geordieland'.

Newcastle has a reputation of being a fun-loving city with many bars, restaurants and night clubs. It consistently features in lists of the top ten party cities in the world. Recently, Newcastle has become popular as a destination for Stag and Hen parties.

The majority of clubs in Newcastle are located in three main areas. The oldest of these is the Bigg Market, followed by the trendy Quayside area, and the newest is The Gate, which is a new indoor complex consisting of bars, upmarket clubs, restaurants and a 12-screen Odeon multiplex cinema.

Pubs and bars are located throughout the city. In addition the area around Central Station features a heavy concentration of pubs, this area attracts more real ale drinkers than other parts of the city.

Over recent years, the suburb of Jesmond has also become a drinking area, with a number of bars being set up along the area's main artery, Osborne Road. These tend to be popular with the area's students and young professionals.

Newcastle – a great city now on the forefront of technical innovation, leisure and culture. Wander down to the transformed waterfront, the Quayside, now lined with stylish hotels, designer bars, restaurants and public art. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a work of art in itself, arches across the Tyne to link the City to Gateshead Quays and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
